Giveaway winner and a weekend break from racing

First of all, the big winner in the 73Threads Giveaway is Theresa Ferguson! Congratulations!  I will be emailing you to get your contact information for 73Threads.  Thank you to everyone who participated!

In the next week I hope to have the race reports for the Illinois Half Marathon, the Toad Suck 10k, and the Light up the Streets 5k finished.  Yes, last weekend I went a little overboard with a 10k in the morning and a 5k that night.

Toad Suck 10k- Saturday, May 2, 2015

This coming weekend I had planned another 5k but to be honest I needed a weekend break from racing.  I think my family needed a weekend break from me racing.  Right before I registered I found out that the race had dropped the mother-daughter category.  I was disappointed but I took it as a sign that maybe this race wasn’t meant to be.

If you’ve been following this blog for a while (or even just a few weeks) it’s pretty obvious that I like to race.  I love the excitement, the competition, challenging myself to do my best, and I just the way I feel after I’m done.  But I don’t like, pre-race nerves, tying up an entire Saturday morning, and let’s be honest- the money.  All these little 5ks and 10ks start to add up, especially when you start adding in entry fees for multiple kids.  I’m trying to be more purposeful with choosing my races.  This weekend was one I just needed to let go.  We have a family race event next weekend that I’m pretty excited about.  This race actually has a FREE kids 1/2 mile color run 30 minutes after the competitive 5k.  I’ve never been to a color run at all so I’m anxious to see how it works.  I think the kids will love it!

I’m also working on a post about how to start a kids a kids track night.  This will actually be my next post.  I’ve been directing our local kids track night program the last few years and have learned many lessons in the process!  This program has grown so much over the years and is really a great community fitness outreach for kids.  More on this to come soon! Have a great day!!

  1. Congrats on your double dip and two races in one day. I’ve done that before but every time it has happened, I’ve gotten injured shortly after (seriously!). Now, I put at least a day between races ;).

I understand with the race costs. You’re really lucky that it seems like you guys have a lot of inexpensive races where you live and they try to include kids, but it adds up when you look at a $25-30 registration fee for a 5K. I love to race too but have tried to cut back to doing ones I really love or a cause I truly support/believe in and not just running a race because it happens to be going on.

The kids track night looks like so much fun! What a cool way to get kids and families out running or exercising. It looks like they all had a great time.
