Several months ago my youngest sister decided to run her first half marathon. She registered for the Nashville Country Music Half Marathon on April 27. My plan was to run with her to help pace her. I knew we would have the best girls weekend together. Then, April 15th happened and I am still trying to sort things out. My oldest daughter (8 yrs. old) told me this past weekend that she did not want me to leave for another race. Honestly, I don’t blame her. What was I thinking? I was gone for 5 days to Boston and it was a very traumatic trip for my whole family- even though I was the only one who went. We have shielded our children from most of the media coverage (I did not want them seeing any gory images from the finish line) but Abi still knows what happened and I know it affected her. She is not ready for me to leave to run another race. So I am not going. It was hard telling my sister but she was very understanding. Right now I just need to be home.
On Saturday we went on a little hike near our house. It was a perfect day. There were several times that I thanked God that I was home safe and we were all together again.
This past weekend was also what I affectionately refer to as “Birthday week” around my house. My middle two children and my mother-in-law all have birthdays within 2 days of each other. This week always includes a lot of celebrating- and a lot of cake! I made a gluten free coconut cream cake for my son. (His favorite cake is coconut cream and my MIL has celiac disease so she cannot have gluten.) Abi is not a fan of coconut so she made a yellow cake from scratch. This year their birthdays fell on Friday and Sunday.

Then on Sunday Anna & Nana had their big day. I made a GF carrot cake for mom and Abi made a chocolate cake (cake mix box this time) for Anna. Carrot cake may be my new favorite kind of cake. Especially with homemade cream cheese icing….. Mmmmmm.

I know my body is still recovering from Boston but for the most part I feel back to normal now. I took off one solid week from running. This time I didn’t even miss it. I think I was so wiped out from the trip home from Boston and shaken up that mentally I needed the break as well. However, after all the cake over the weekend I was ready to get back into things on Monday. When I pulled up my weather app Monday morning it immediately opened up to Hopkinton since that was the last place I had checked the weather. (Yes, apparently I only feel the need to check the weather when it involves running.) Immediately I thought about how much had happened in the last week. Enough said.
The first run back after a marathon is always a bit nerve wracking to me. My body is still generally tired (aka SLOW) and my motto for the run is “what’s the damage?” Fortunately, Boston was kind to me. I was sore for a few days immediately following the race but no injuries to report.
I feel as though I am uncharted territory going into a summer of training. The past three summers I’ve been out of commission (pregnancy one summer and coming back after an injury the other two) so it is a pleasant surprise to be healthy and able to run at this time of the year. I am going to lower my weekly mileage a little (around 50?), focus on speed work and actually follow a weight training program in the gym.

So what’s next? I have quite a few 5K and 10K races lined up that are all within an hour of my home. I’m actually going to be following a custom made 5K training schedule from the Run S.M.A.R.T. program which starts next week. The last time I trained specifically for a 5K was in 2001 so it’s been a while! I have run plenty of them but I always sprinkle them in the middle of marathon training.

After I decided not to run the Nashville Half this weekend I registered for a local 10K which is about 5 minutes from my house. Abi is doing it too and this will be her first 10k. I’m not 100% sure if the race will go on because the weather is not looking that good but I guess we’ll see. It is a first time race but the course is certified. I ran the course yesterday and it will be interesting. It is not flat by any means. I am not looking to PR but I would like to break 40 minutes if possible. I cannot fathom running 6.2 miles at a 6:20 pace right now but maybe it will all come back to me when I get to the starting line. at least that’s what I’m hoping! If anything it will be a good workout for the 10K I’m doing next weekend.
And lastly… I’ve been doing a lot of thinking on my next marathon and I might actually be changing things up a bit. I’m now thinking about running one in October and switching to St. Jude half in December. Marathon planning takes a lot of planning and I am already trying to figure out what races I will run if I am going to add in Boston in 2014. Originally, I had not planned on running this again next year but after everything that happened I would really like to be there now. Anyway, that’s a whole other can of worms so I better close..
Thanks again for the many congratulations and comments on my Boston race report. I’ve always liked marathons but Boston made me fall in love with this distance. Really. When I think back to the actual race portion of my Boston experience I have to smile. I loved every single mile and I’ve never felt that way about a marathon before.
