5K Season is here and I am in the thick of it! After last week’s “extra long” 5K, I was ready to race on a certified course. I needed a good time and I knew Toad Suck would be the right course. Yes, this is the real name of this race. There is a festival in Conway, Arkansas every May called Toad Suck Daze and every year they have a big 5K and 10K. I ran this race 2 years ago for the first time and finished in 20:04.
My friend Tish met me at 6:15 and we left for Conway. Once we got there we had just enough time to get our race packets, chips, find the bathroom and warm-up.When we finished our warm-up we went straight to the starting line. It was packed! The 5K and 10K have the same start.
We’ve got the starting line jitters!
Mile 1- 6:06. Right on pace. I really wanted my miles to be as close to 6 minutes as possible. I knew if I started this fast I would positive split but right now that is the only way I run 5K’s. Lovely strategy, I know!
Mile 2- 6:12. Starting to slow down… During this mile the 5K and 10K runners separated. I knew I was first female but I didn’t know by how much and I honestly was racing more for time than placement.
Mile 3- 6:16. I was really running out of steam. I do not like positive splitting like this. Maybe when I get better at them I will learn to pace them better but I have not got into a “pacing groove” with 5K’s yet.
Mile 3.1- 0.44 (5:44 pace). I LOVE the finish of this race. It is around the high school track and it totally makes me feel like I’m in running in a high school track meet. Good times- literally!! I heard them announcing “first female finisher” and it made me want to sprint it in even faster.
Official 5K Finish Time: 19:19. (6:13 avg. mile)
My friend Tish finished right after me so we got some water and jogged to
my car John’s truck to get our phones. I called John right away since he couldn’t make it to the race. Then we ran into some friends and chatted for a while before the awards ceremony.
Tammy & Tish both set their PR’s today! Great job ladies!!
We won 1st and 2nd female overall.
All in all, great race. The course has quite a few turns but it is flat and fast- two of my favorite race qualities! My current 5K goal is to break 19 minutes. I haven’t run in the 18’s since college and before having kids. I know I am not quite ready but hopefully I can get there speed-wise within the next year. I knew when my 2nd mile dropped today it wasn’t going to happen but that’s ok. I feel really good about today’s race. My knee felt good which is another blessing. The lower mileage this week and last helped with that, I’m sure.
After the awards ceremony, Tish and I rewarded ourselves with a trip to Starbucks, TJ Maxx and Target before heading home. That made the day even better! See ya next year Toad Suck… I think next time I will give the 10K a try!
Do you have a 5K pacing/ racing strategy? If so, please share!
