Boston Blues? Just looking ahead

Boston Blues? Just looking ahead

Well, I have not posted much recently and I must admit I just haven’t been in the mood.  I’ve been busy, I’ve had family in town (my sister recently had a baby!!) and I just haven’t felt inspired to write much.  I recently passed the one year anniversary (March 31, 2011) of my stress fracture and I must say that I am glad that date has come and gone.  I am now officially one year out from the injury that rocked my running world.  I know it could have been much worse and I am thankful it was only a stress fracture.  On the 31st, I celebrated my one year milestone by running my first long run since the marathon.  I went for a nice 15 miler (7:39 pace) and felt great.   I know I’ve mentioned the drama of last spring before but reaching the one year milestone felt good.  I am moving on…

After a run last week with my little man

I wish I were moving on to running Boston this spring but that will have to wait. I knew I would not be able to run Boston this year.  I was not able to train and qualify by September so another year was gone.  Don’t get me wrong- I am very happy and excited for many of my running friends who are running on April 16th and you better believe I will be tracking them. I will just be that much more excited when it is April 15, 2013 and it is my turn! ๐Ÿ™‚

In the meantime I am focusing on racing some shorter events. This weekend I have a 10K and I really would like to break 40 minutes in a legitimate road race.  I would love a repeat of the 10K I did on the track in February but we’ll see. That was one of those days when everything went right and it was the perfect storm for a perfect race.  Don’t you just love those runs?!

At the end of April I’m planning on running in a local 5K.  Then I’m running in another 5K the first weekend in May.  I’d like to break 19 minutes but not sure if I will be there speed-wise yet.  Still working on finding a good half marathon (may have one in May) but have not registered for anything yet.  Running in the NYC Marathon in November is a huge motivator but it feels forever a way.

Random Update Time:

  • New shoes seem to be working fine.  I have been rotating shoes in my training for the first time in my life and I must admit it is a little exciting.  Who knew running shoe options could be so fun?!
  • I ran my fastest 800 repeats on Wednesday.  I only had 6 so my goal was to get them all sub 3 minutes.   They ranged from 2:56- 2:59.  Accomplishing workouts like these gives me confidence.  I can see progress in my 800 times and that makes me feel good!
  • My knee is doing better.  I can still feel the area sometimes but it is much “duller” (is that a word?) and I am able to run through it just fine.  I think this injury is finally on its way out.  Oh yeah!!
  • I survived being home alone with my crew over the past long weekend (Thursday – Sunday).  John had to go to Atlanta for a PhD class and I held down the fort.  I must say I have A LOT of respect for single parents who do this all the time.  I generally consider myself a pretty patient person but when I am the lone parent I get really impatient and irritable.  I am very happy to have John back.
  • As mentioned earlier, my sister just had her first baby (2 days ago) and I have a new niece.  She is perfect and so tiny. It’s hard to remember mine at that age but it really wasn’t that long ago…
    My new niece!
  • Easter pictures…. I took my kids pictures to send to grandparents and other family.  3 out of the 4 are looking at the camera which I definitely consider a picture success!
Happy Easter!

So… I will let you know how the 10K goes on Saturday.  Anyone else racing this weekend?  If so, what are you doing?  Have a great Easter weekend everyone!!

  1. OH so much here for me to comment on. Yes, you will be in Boston next year. And then I’ll be the one with Boston Blues. New York! Oh, How I would love to do that one too. Is it too late to register and not have to get the new HM time? Probably. Wonderful Easter pic. Great 800’s and 15 miler. And your knee feeling better…awesome! Okay, my 2.5 seconds without a kid interrupting me is up!!! If only all my blog readers understood how hard it is to comment and read blogs…then I wouldn’t be losing followers. But i know you get it…super mom of 4. Even if I only get to 3 blogs during a day, I’m glad I got here. Great to see a post from one of my favorite and most inspiring runners!

    1. Thanks Amanda! I am really excited about tracking you. I can’t wait to hear all about it so I know what to expect next year. : )

  2. Can you believe how much babies grow in just one year? It’s amazing! What a precious little girl ๐Ÿ™‚

Nice fast 15 miler! Glad you are back into things full swing. It sounds like we had very similar knee issues. My knee went to just a dullness too- and gets a little more sore when I do a hard workout or a longer run, but not at all like when it was first hurt and I took the time off.

Best wishes on your 10k! I know you will rock it!! No races for me this weekend….At least I don’t have any planned yet ๐Ÿ™‚

    Have a great Easter!

  3. Your kids are adorable! And congrats on a sweet little niece! I’m racing a 4 mile run tomorrow, although probably not even at your 10k pace. ๐Ÿ™‚ Looking forward to hearing your report– best wishes for a new pr!

    1. Thank you Laura! Good luck in your race! I have never raced that distance but am planning to do one in August. I will have to read your race report to learn how you did it!

  4. I don’t know if you caught this on my blog, so I thought I’d leave it here for you
I find that the ghosts feel a bit roomier in the toe box than the launches, and I notice that though they are on the same offset, the launches feel like they are lower. I think it has to do with the heel shape. I haven’t done a test run on the pure flows yet- too afraid to do that until after Eugene.
And yes! The Ghost 4s are my favorite shoe- so far. ๐Ÿ™‚ For a shorter race 5k to HM I will use the Launches, but now that I have the Pure Flows I might switch to those. Need to test them first ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Good to know. Thank you! I may give the Ghost’s a try next. Tomorrow I’ll be racing my first race ever in Brooks. Hopefully I’ll be feeling speedy! : )
