An Unplanned Progressive Tempo
There are some days when everything just clicks. You feel good, the weather is perfect and you just get in the groove. That happened to me today. I had an easy 5 mile run planned. Goal- I just wanted to run around an 8- 8:15 pace. I ran my first mile in a 7:50. Nothing special about that. My second mile was a 7:40 and it got me thinking- what if I can get 10 seconds faster each mile… For some reason I love coming up with crazy challenges like this to make things interesting when I run solo. Mile 3 was a 7:25. It was then I decided to kick it up a notch since I was feeling warmed up and ready to go. I wanted to run further and faster. I had an easy run yesterday so why not push it a little…
Mile 4- 6:58
Mile 5- 6:48
Mile 6- 6:29
Mile 7- 6:28
Mile 8- 6:17
All in all, I ended up running a 6:59 for this little 8 mile run.
If I had set out on today’s run with the goal of running 8 miles sub 7 I don’t know if I would have done it. I know I would have been dreading it and I would not have had nearly as much fun as I did today! I had my music on and I was in the zone. You know the feeling. It’s days like today that make me especially happy to be a runner!
I hope I will be feeling this good 4 weeks from today… It’s almost time for the Houston Marathon!! I can’t wait! 🙂
