Several different stress fracture recovery websites I’ve researched mention doing a “Walking Test” before returning to running. Basically, once the stress fracture area hasn’t hurt in a few weeks you can try walking. The idea is to build up to being able to walk briskly for 60 minutes without feeling any pain. Once you can do this 3 times you should be able to run on it. I asked my doctor about this and he said that is true.
It has been a little over 7 weeks since my last run and I have had a few weeks with almost no stress fracture pain so I decided to try a mini walking test. I walked for 20 minutes briskly and it felt fine. (YEAH!!!!!) My workout plan this week will be to do the elliptical 3 days and walk for 30 minutes this weekend. Of course, this is all pending a pain-free stress fracture area!
I’ll keep you posted…
